Just to let you all know, we will be hosting another event at First United Methodist of Carrollton on SEPTEMBER 24, 2011*!

We will be packing 150,000 meals.

Go check out a new thing my sisters and I are working on here.

This is the first product in a line of different things (coffee sleeves, totes, jewelry, aprons, etc.) that we are making as a fund raiser for FMSC.

Each item is embroidered with a number - the number of children that will be fed with the purchase of the item. So, for example, if you buy a $25 tote and it took us $2.50 to make it, the other $22.50 will go as a donation to FMSC and will feed about 118 kids.

That tote would have a "118" stitched on it somewhere, so that people will ask what it means, and you can tell them you fed 118 kids by buying that bag.

We hope to have more products up soon, but people keep buying them before we can post them! (Not a bad problem to have, I suppose...)

Congratulations everyone,

In five shifts this past weekend, we packed 203,472 meals for hungry children around the world! About 850 of us came together in Lewisville and worked to feed 557 kids for an entire year.

I don't have the breakdown of which shifts were able to pack the most meals, because really, that's not what it's about. And also, I forgot to write it down. But we all know who among us packed the MOST BOXES in each shift, and we'll just be humble and keep it to ourselves. Until next time...

2. Lisa is a missionary who works with YWAM in multiple places but was sent to Haiti on a mission a couple of years ago - relationship set
3. Lisa went down after the earthquake to work in a village - they were supplied FMSC food through Love a Child in Haiti
4. Lisa has spent several months organizing relief in a village in Haiti and is now adopting a little girl from the orphanage she works in (Deanie is 5 months old now)
5. Thanks to FMSC food we pack - people are fed - love is found - a new family formed :)

She sent the pics attached to Love a Child or FMSC - just for fun - but its amazing how full circle a bag of rice can be :)"

Calling All Cash!

I know from some of you guys that you are in the process of doing fund raisers, large or individual-scale, for FMSC. If you are sitting on bags of quarters, donation checks, jars of change, etc., now is the time to turn them in to me! You can all feel free to continue collecting your quarters or dollars or whatever all the way until the event, but let's not hold on to donations any longer than we have to!

Some of you also plan to just donate your $40 share, or to give even more to be able to allow others to pack who cannot afford their $40, but are just waiting for the right time to do it. That time is now! (And that website is here!)

For the past couple of MobilePack events, pretty close to all of the money has come in at or really close to the date of the event. For those past events, there were funding deadlines, but they were not particularly enforced. Now, however, with the number of MobilePack events increasing constantly, we don't want to continue to make FMSC front the funds to purchase raw materials for MobilePack events like they have in the past.

The second installment (the second 1/3) of the $34,000 required for our September MobilePack day is due on July 25! That is when they will purchase those big ton bags of rice and soy, the boxes of veggies and chicken flavoring, and book the 58' trucks for our event. Let's help FMSC by providing the moneys needed to make that investment, rather than having it all fall on their shoulders once again.

I am available to pick anything up from those of you who don't see me on a regular basis, just let me know and I will stop by! Just email me at fmscdallas@gmail.com.

Also, if you would like to help reach this goal (or the final goal, which is due at the event) by participating in another fund raiser, and you need M&M tubes, tribute cards, change jars, or any other materials, I am happy to provide you with those as well and will bring them to you.

We did something like this last Christmas, but I think it can be useful any time of the year. I now have cute little cards made that can be purchased and given as a thank you, birthday/wedding/anniversary/Mother's Day/Father's Day/Happy Tuesday gift, whatever! If you'd like to "buy" one, please email me at fmscdallas@gmail.com and we can figure out a way to hand them off or ship them.

The cards are available in the following denominations to be given in the recipient's honor:

The next event is coming up on September 10-11 in Lewisville! Sign-ups are available here.

In one two-hour shift, each of you can expect to pack an average of 235 meals. That will feed a child for about eight months... PER volunteer! A $40 donation covers the cost of those 235 meals. That's feeding a child for eight months for only $40! Please consider setting a donation goal in addition to coming to pack the meals.

The more funding we have in AS you sign up, the better! 2/3 of the entire funds necessary to put on the event are due OVER A MONTH before the event takes place, so I really need your help in getting those in as soon as possible.

Some fun ways to raise your $40 donation:

1 - Get some M&M tubes, fill them with quarters. 3 tubes and you're there!

2 - Have friends/neighbors/classmates sponsor you. This can be done per meal, so you'd get 6 people to sponsor you for 40 meals a piece, totaling $8 per sponsor, or per hour that you pack (if you'd like to do more than one shift), or however you'd like to do it!

3 - Have a couple of rice-and-bean dinners with the family when normally you might have gone out to dinner, and donate the difference in cost. OR have a couple of Redbox DVD nights on a weekend when you might normally have taken the family to a full-priced movie and donate the difference. One evening IN at the movies could save well over the $40! A couple of these will provide the whole donation for your family.

4 - Give up lattes, sodas, or chips, etc. for a certain period of time and donate what you normally would have spent.

5 - Ask your employer if they will match your donation so that you only have to raise half. OR, do this even if you can donate right out-of-pocket... maybe you can sponsor someone else*!

6 - Give our gift cards as gifts, donating what you might've spent on some bath and body stuff or a tie or something you don't know if they'd even want.

7 - Get a group together and raise all of your $40s together through a bake sale, car wash, garage sale, or something similar. Combined garage sales can really rake in the money, we've seen it happen!

*If you would like to donate an extra $40 to sponsor someone that really might otherwise miss out, please let me know that this is what you would like to do as you make your donation. Some people, especially those with larger families, really might not be able to make that happen, so we need a few others to step in and fill the gap!

Upcoming Events!

So as you all know by now, we are going to start stepping up the events in the Dallas area. That means you don't have to wait 6-9 months in between events any more, which is always a good thing, right?

So far we are in talks for four events within the next year! Several of those are for sure on the books. Put them in your iPhones and calendars!

September 10-11, 2010, we will be doing 200K meals at Garden Ridge Church of Christ, in Lewisville. Sign-ups are now available here. (To donate to that event, click here.)

December 4-5, 2010, we will be packing 200K meals at Lovers Lane United Methodist Church in Dallas. (To donate to that event, click here.)

Sharing the Love

I went to Minneapolis yesterday.

It was pretty fun, I mean, kind of a hefty day-trip but totally worth it. I went with my friend Jon Beckman who is like right there on the team of (all equally-ranked) #1 supporters of me and Dane and FMSC.

We got to meet with Mark Crea, the CEO, for the better part of a day and with Brian Molohon (National Development Director) for quite a while too.

I just want to go ahead and tell you guys, they are LEGIT. I mean they mean it about that place belonging to God. They didn’t sugar coat or feel us out before opening in prayer and talking about miracles and God’s will etc., they just are who they are. They are just doing all they can to be obedient and otherwise trying to stay out of his way. I hope you all can meet them one day.

We are officially changing the way we do things around here. For the sake of maximum involvement, momentum, efficiency, widespread-ness, whatever buzzword you want to pick, we won’t be doing a half million meals in September.

Don’t cry! I know! But it’ll be okay!

Instead of events every six or nine months, we are going to start doing them every two or three months, in different places around town. Several churches came forward after the last event and offered to host an event, Coppell, Lovers Lane, Lewisville, etc., so that’s what we’re going to do! Share the love! Open up whole new neighborhoods and introduce them to FMSC!

Now, I think we could get the people there every two or three months to do pretty sizable events, but raising the money over and over again that fast is going to be tough. So we’ll probably do some 100K-200K events until the fund raising gets a little more steady.

(Nudge, nudge. That’s pretty much talking about… well, you. Not the other guy/lady/kid. I’d say sorry, but I’m not. Not really.)

So look forward to less of a huge gap between events, which will be oh so helpful to me. You can’t really start talking to people about their schedules until at MOST three months ahead of time, which means usually it’s lie low for a few months and then ramp the whole thing back up from almost a stand-still.

As always, please let me know if you’d like to be involved! There’s pretty much no strength/skill set/interest that I can’t use. I need you all!

M&Ms and Garage Sale

M&Ms

While we nail down the location of the next event, I could really use your help in continuing to keep the fund raising ball rolling. We can't afford to lose momentum!

If anyone is a part of, or is aware of a group that might want to participate in the M&M tube fund raiser, please let me know. We've done this with a bunch of groups so far, and it's a lot of fun! I mean, Step 1 is eating chocolate. Can't beat that. Step 2 is to tell people about the organization that you teamed up with, and why you're excited about it. Step 3 is to bring back your heavy tubes and jars of quarters and dump them with me, and Step 4 is to know that you helped feed 82 children for every tube you filled!

Please check it out here and let me know if you can think of anyone that might want to participate. It gets to be the most fun when there is a competition involved - family vs. family, Boy Scout Troop vs. Girl Scout Troop, 1st grade vs. 2nd grade vs. 3rd grade, one soccer team vs. another, etc... We have raised well over $3,000 already through just this fund raiser! Let's keep it going.

Garage Sale

Also, April 10th we will be having a garage sale to benefit FMSC at First United Methodist Church of Carrollton. If you have anything that you would like to donate to be sold (not trash or broken things, but clothes, functioning appliances, decorations, etc.) bring it up to the church on April 9 (Friday) between 2pm and 9pm. Anything that you don't want that doesn't get sold will be picked up at the end of the sale on Saturday by Metrocrest Social Services. So you don't even have to figure out how to get it back home!

The church where the garage sale will be held is at 2201 E. Hebron Parkway, Carrollton.

I'm not sure how many meals we will be able to commit to pack in September. It will all depend on how funds start coming in before then, so let's get started! With your enthusiasm, I believe we could bring in enough people to do just about anything, so don't let the funds hold us back!

I'm just going to go ahead and say it...

Look.

You guys are awesome. We've packed 477,576 meals together. We've worked countless man-hours, inhaled vegetarian chicken and soy powder until we're all vitamin- and protein-fortified, we've yelled goofy cheers, dumped goods through a funnel with no bag on the end of it, flung rice across the boxing table, on and on and on. And fed over 1,300 children for an entire year.

So I feel like I can be honest with you.

It looks like we're going to be able to cover the cost of the 270,864 meals we just packed a couple weekends ago. Congratulations! That's $46,046.88. That's no small feat.

Last time, when we set out to pack 100,000 meals, we committed to $17,000. We ended up with about $23,000!

But you know what? A lot of that came from just a few people.

We are SO lucky to have a couple of people that are really on board and excited about fund raising and giving sacrificially. But IF we're going to do HALF A MILLION MEALS in September, we're going to ALL have to pitch in!

The beautiful thing about FMSC is that as the number of meals grows, so does the number of people. That means whether we do 100K or 100 million meals, ideally, every volunteer still packs only $40 worth of food. That's manageable, guys. It really is.

So start thinking now how you can raise that donation, or how you can go above and beyond and be able to sponsor other people that really can't give - little kids, elderly, underprivileged - for the next event! Those few generous people can't keep up with how fast we're growing, we need everybody!

Have faith! Be bold! Get creative! Don't just give what you can spare, give something up! I bet you'll even enjoy it.

The Food

The food that we pack and send is a packet of rice, soy protein, dehydrated vegetables, and vitamin-fortified chicken flavoring that has been engineered by dietitians to be exactly what an undernourished child needs.

Each meal costs only 24 cents, so to cover the cost of the meals that we will be packing in June, we will need to raise $36,000.

The food is distributed by FMSC to pre-existing, local organizations worldwide. They give to places such as clinics, refugee camps, missions organizations, etc.

M&M Tube Fund Raiser

Haiti Help (from FMSC in Minnesota)

Respond to the cries of Haiti

On January 12, Haiti was hit with a level 7.0 earthquake, the most devastating earthquake in the nation's history. Please join Feed My Starving Children in praying for the people of Haiti.

An update from Bobby Burnette of Love a Child, our largest mission partner in Haiti: "Thank you for praying. We are only alive because of a miracle. We have had at least 18 after-shocks, the smallest being a 4.5! We are fine, but many are dead. The warehouse with all the FMSC food is fine. Tomorrow we'll be getting food to all those in need."

FMSC has worked with mission partners in Haiti for more than 10 years. Today we have nearly 200 partners in Haiti. We sent more than 25 million meals there in 2009.

In the coming days and weeks, we will work directly with our mission partners in Haiti to quickly determine how best to support them. An emergency response plan is being developed.

"A Mission That Means More"

Below is a letter I received from Feed My Starving Children and wanted to share with you all. It really is so much more than just food!

"Dear Friends,

In Haiti, being able to go to school is a special privilege. Many children who do go to school walk for hours to get there. Most arrive with empty stomachs.

Parents send their children to school to learn, but also because they know their child will get one nutritious meal each school day. Our partners tell us that if the meals weren't being served, the children would not come.

With your support, Feed My Starving Children (FMSC) meals can help students in nine separate mission schools get one meal a day while at school. We have requests for 2.3 million meals for Haitian students this school year.

We need your support to feed these Haitian children. Please prayerfully consider how you can help us produce and fund the meals these children so desperately need. This life-changing investment is just 17 cents per meal.

Quarters and Christmas Cards

Hey everyone, happy almost holidays!

Fundraising has started up in the past few weeks for FMSC and we are making great headway. Be a part of it!

Christmas Cards - Gift Alternative

One of the things that I have available are Christmas cards that can be given in place of a Christmas gift. Each card reads "Merry Christmas! In your honor I gave $__ to feed ___ of God's children, hungry in body and spirit." On the back is a Bible verse: "For I was hungry, and you gave me something to eat. -Jesus, Matthew 25:35".

A donation ($17 for 100 meals, $34 for 200, $85 for 500, any amount you choose at $.17/meal) is made either through me, through the FMSC website, through JustGive.org, or mailed directly to FMSC (be sure to put our event # on there, #1003-11). I will then supply you with the card to be given for Christmas. This is a truly lasting and meaningful Christmas present, I encourage you all to think about it!

M&M Tubes and Quarters

Another fundraiser is the M&M tubes to be filled with quarters. I'm sure some of you are familiar with these, as they were introduced by Ahren at the packing day last June. I have these M&M tubes for sale ($2 each or 2 for $3). Once you eat all the Mini M&Ms, one tube full of quarters is about $20. The change can then be mailed to FMSC, returned to me, or deposited and you can mail a check.

One person took a couple of these just last night and went home to see what she could find. This morning she let me know that just digging through a change jar, she filled 1 1/2 (about $30) without much effort at all. Most of us have this change sitting at home, and we're looking for something to do with it!

The M&M tubes are also a great way to get kids involved. They can ask friends, teachers, neighbors, Sunday School teachers, etc. for their spare quarters, and they may even get a chance to explain what it's for. Two of these containers would add up to the personal donation goal that I am challenging each volunteer to adopt this year.

Last year we shot for 100,000 meals in two days to be sent all over the world,
helping to stop world hunger. We ended up completing 206,712! This year we will aim to do one whole container, which is 270,840 meals. Come be a part!

The food that we pack and send is a packet of rice, soy protein, dehydrated vegetables, and vitamin-fortified chicken flavoring that has been engineered by dieticians to be exactly what an undernourished child needs.

Each meal costs only 17 cents, so to cover the cost of the meals that we will be packing, we will need to raise about $46,000.

The food is distributed by FMSC to pre-existing, local organizations worldwide. They give to places such as clinics, refugee camps, missions organizations, etc. FMSC personally visits each distribution point to make sure that they are what they appear to be, and that the food is being used for its intended purpose.

Children/Youth are welcome! Packing meals is fun and high-energy but is feasible for anyone. Over 50% of the meals that FMSC sends out each year are packed by volunteers under the age of 18.

Spring 2010 Meal-Packing Day!

Hi everybody, and thank you all so much again for your help this past June! And for your interest in being involved in our next event.

The next FMSC Mobile Packing Day will be March 5-7, 2010! Put it on your calendars, tell your friends, your coworkers, your family, your boss...

Our goal right now is to do an entire container of food, which is 270,840 meals. Last time we shot for 100,000, and because of certain circumstances, we were able to do over 206,000. However, we didn't have to raise all of the funds for all of the meals we packed last time, because we were ultimately just bailing out another group that ended up having to cancel. This time, we'll have to raise all of the funds ourselves. At 17 cents per meal, that is going to come to $46,042.80. Seems daunting, but it's not! I don't think it'll be a problem at all.

We're going to approach things slightly differently this time, since now so many of you know more about the event. Last time, with no FMSC history in Dallas, we had to just try to get as many people as possible to come check it out. This time, more of you already know and are excited about it, so we're going to have to ask for your help.

Each meal-packing volunteer will pack about $40 worth of food in a 2-hour shift, which is about 235 meals. I would love to challenge every volunteer to set a personal donation goal of $40. This way we can each say that we really provided about 235 children (per volunteer per shift) with a meal; not just by packing it, but also by providing the resources for it. This might seem like a lot, especially for families, but I'd challenge you to set the task to each individual volunteer, even (especially!) the kids. Look below for some fundraising ideas.

I would also appreciate any help you guys could give with spreading the word. Please let me know if you think your company, church, school, sports team, Scout Troop, or any other organization might be interested in getting involved, or might be able to send a donation. If you'd like donation information, I'd be happy to send it to you! Just ask.

GREAT WAYS TO RAISE YOUR DONATION:

1. MINI M&M TUBES: Many of you saw these at the event. If you can't get your hands on one or two of these, let me know and I can sell you some (with the M&Ms still inside). Eat the M&Ms, one tube full of quarters is $14, fill 3 tubes & you’ve raised $42!

2. PAY IN CASH: Pay for everything you can in cash for several weeks, keep the change in a jar, it adds up quickly!

3. SPONSORSHIPS: Ask friends, family, classmates & co-workers to sponsor you for this event with a per hour donation.

4. MATCHING FUNDS: Check to see if your company offers donation-matching or will sponsor employees per volunteer hour that they work.

5. HUNGER JAR or SPECIAL DONATION: Ask your church, class, club, office or any organization you’re involved in to take up a donation for FMSC. There are videos & fliers available to help you in making a presentation to your group.

6. SKIP THE SODA: When you eat out, drink water instead of soda & put the savings in your “donation jar”.

7. RICE FOR DINNER: Serve your family rice and beans for dinner one night & gain a better understanding of what a meal is like for many hungry families around the world. Put the money you saved on that meal toward your donation.
